The calendar

Find your way around Calendar in Nixt Mail — its views, moving through time, showing calendars, reminders, time zones, keyboard shortcuts and settings.

Calendar shows your own events, the calendars of accounts you connect, and invitations found in your mail, together in one view. You can see a day, a work week, a week, a month, or an agenda list.

To open it, click Calendar in the module rail on the left of the window, or choose View › Calendar.

The other calendar pages cover:

Events and invitationsCreating, editing, moving, repeating and deleting events, Quick add, guests, and answering invitations.

What you see

On a wide window, Calendar has a sidebar on the left and the calendar on the right.

INVITATIONS — addressOne per connected mail account: Invitations in mail, the invitations found in that mailbox. Its lock icon’s tooltip reads Read from mail. Answer here; change them where they came from.

A group shows Loading… while it loads. If a server cannot be reached and an offline copy is kept, the group shows Can’t reach the server. Showing the copy saved on this device. If loading failed, the group shows the reason.

Views

ViewWhat it shows
DayOne day, hour by hour.
Work weekThe days outside the weekend, starting the day after it: Monday to Friday, or Sunday to Thursday when Settings › General › Weekend is Friday and Saturday. Whichever day your week starts on.
WeekSeven days, starting on the day set in Settings › Calendar › Week starts on.
MonthSix weeks around the month, with the events of each day.
AgendaA list of the days ahead that have something in them, starting from the day in focus. Its length is set in Settings › Calendar › Agenda length.

The view you choose is remembered, so Calendar opens as you left it — unless Settings › Calendar › Calendar opens in names a view, in which case Calendar opens on that view, at today, every time you come to it.

Day, Work week and Week

  • The grid covers all 24 hours. It opens scrolled to the start of your working day, or, later in the day, to an hour or two before now.
  • The working day is shaded, and a red line marks the current time.
  • Click a day’s heading in Work week or Week to open that day.
  • All-day events and events longer than a day sit in a lane above the hours, labelled all day. When the lane holds more than fits, a **+**N button shows the rest and Less folds them away.
  • Events that overlap are drawn side by side.

Month

  • Click a date number to open that day in Day view.
  • When a day has more events than fit, N more opens that day.
  • Point at a day to show a + button, New event on date, which opens the editor for a new event at the start of your working day.
  • The first day of each month is labelled with the month, such as Oct 1.

Agenda

  • Each row shows the time or All day, the title, the location, and the calendar’s colour.
  • Not answered marks an invitation you have not replied to, and Maybe one you answered maybe.
  • Join opens the meeting link of an event that has not ended yet.
  • When nothing is coming up, the view says Nothing in the next N days.

How events look

AppearanceWhat it means
Calendar’s colourWhich calendar the event is in. A calendar with its own colour on the server uses it; others get one of a fixed set of colours.
Dashed outlineAn invitation you have not answered, or answered Maybe.
Faded and struck throughAn event you declined. Shown only while Settings › Calendar › Declined events is on.
FadedAn event that shows you as free, or an event that has finished while Settings › Calendar › Past events is Faded.

Move through time

ToDo this
Go to todayClick Today, press T, or choose View › Today.
Go forward or backClick the arrows, press J or K, or choose View › Next or View › Previous.
Go to a dateClick it in the small month, or press G or choose View › Go to Date… and pick it in the Go to date picker.
Change the viewClick a view in the header, press D, X, W, M or A, or choose it from the View menu.

Show and hide calendars

Click a calendar in the sidebar list to hide its events; click it again to show them. A shown calendar has a filled, ticked box in its colour; a hidden one has an empty box and a dimmed name. Hidden calendars are remembered.

Hiding Invitations in mail hides the invitations read from that mailbox.

An invitation that is also in a connected calendar is shown once, from the calendar, because the calendar’s copy is the one that receives later changes.

Export a calendar

To keep a copy of a calendar, or take it to another app, right-click it in the sidebar (on a touch screen, touch and hold it) and choose Export as .ics…. Nixt Mail saves every event from ten years back to ten years ahead to your Downloads folder as a file named after the calendar and today’s date, such as My calendar 2026-10-08.ics, and a snack bar says how many events it saved. Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook and other calendar apps can import the file.

Reminders

An event can have one reminder, such as 15 minutes before. See Events and invitations for setting one.

Where reminders go off is set in Settings › Notifications › Calendar reminders:

ChoiceWhat happens
In the window onlyA message appears at the bottom of the Nixt Mail window while it is open. This is the default.
In the window, and from the systemThe message appears in the window. On macOS and Windows, the next week of reminders — up to 48 — is also handed to the operating system, which shows them even when Nixt Mail is closed. On macOS, while the Nixt Mail window is in front, the system adds the reminder to its list without a banner, because the window already shows it.
Not at allEvents keep their reminders, but none go off.

A reminder says, for example, Stand-up starts in 10 minutes, Flight is starting now, or, for an all-day event, Dentist is today or Offsite is tomorrow, followed by the location. For an event with a meeting link, the message has a Join button.

  • A reminder does not go off for an event you declined, or one that was cancelled.
  • A reminder that came due while Nixt Mail was closed is not shown when you open it, unless the system was holding it.
  • While the app lock is on, reminders handed to the system say only Calendar reminder and Open Nixt Mail to see what is coming up., and name no event.
  • The first reminder handed to the system may make it ask for permission to show notifications.
  • On Linux, reminders go off in the window while Nixt Mail is open.
  • Reminders in the window are not shown while Autopilot is open.

Time zones

  • Events you create are saved in this computer’s time zone. A repeating event keeps its time of day across daylight-saving changes, so a 09:00 meeting stays at 09:00.
  • All-day events are dates, and stay on the same dates wherever you are.
  • Invitations and calendars from other time zones are shown in your local time, including invitations that name a Windows time zone.
  • If the sender’s time zone cannot be read, the event’s details show The sender’s time zone (zone) could not be read, so this time may be out.
  • Times are shown on a 12-hour or 24-hour clock according to Settings › General › Clock format.

Keyboard shortcuts

These keys work while Calendar is on screen and nothing — the compose window, the command palette or Autopilot — is in front of it. In Mail, the same letters keep their mail meanings: A is still Reply all and C still a new message.

They are single letters, so they work only when Settings › Keyboard › Single-key shortcuts is on, and not while you are typing in a text field.

Offline copyKeeps connected calendars on this device, encrypted, so they open at once and can be read offline. Turning it off deletes the copy. See Calendar accounts.Off

Two related settings live elsewhere: Settings › Notifications › Calendar reminders, and Settings › General › Clock format, which also sets the clock for mail.

Restore defaults in this section does not turn off the offline copy, because turning it off deletes what it kept.

On a narrow window

  • When the calendar area is narrower than about 980 points, the sidebar is hidden. Its controls move into the header as icon buttons: New event (plus), Quick add (sparkle), and Calendars, which opens the sidebar’s contents in a small window.
  • When it is narrower than about 600 points, only Day and Agenda are offered. If you had chosen another view, the calendar shows Agenda until there is room again, then returns to your view.
