Pictures on the page

Place PNG and JPEG pictures, move, resize and crop pictures already on a page, and replace or remove pictures while checking how well each will print.

Pictures you place become part of the page, like the pictures a document already has, so they print and appear in every reader. A picture kept as a stamp — a seal or a logo you use again and again — is different; see Stamps.

Placing a picture

  1. On the Edit tab, click Add picture.
  2. Drag a box on the page where the picture should go.
  3. In the Choose a picture dialog, choose a PNG or JPEG file.

The picture keeps its shape: it is fitted inside the box you drew and centred in it, rather than squashed to the box. The message says Placed followed by the file name, and that its shape is kept.

  • A PNG with transparent parts keeps them, so a scanned signature or a logo sits on the page rather than in a white box.
  • A file that isn’t a PNG or a JPEG is refused: Nixt PDF can put PNG and JPEG pictures onto a page. followed by the file name and is neither.

Moving, resizing and cropping pictures

Use the Move pictures tool for any picture on the page, whether you placed it or it came with the document.

  1. On the Edit tab, click Move pictures. Every picture on the page is outlined faintly.
  2. In the tool strip, choose Move and resize or Crop.
  3. Press a picture to pick it up. It shows eight handles, one at each corner and one on each side.

Moving and resizing

With Move and resize chosen:

  • Move — drag the middle of the picture.
  • Resize — drag a handle.
  • Keep the proportions — hold Shift while you drag a corner handle.

While you drag, the picture’s starting position stays outlined faintly. Nothing changes in the document until you let go, so one drag is one step for Undo. After a move the picture stays picked up, so you can drag it again.

Cropping

With Crop chosen, the handles sit on the part of the picture you can see, and the whole picture is outlined faintly behind them.

  • Drag a handle inwards to trim that edge.
  • You can’t drag beyond the edges of the picture itself.
  • Dragging the middle doesn’t move the picture while Crop is chosen.

Letting go

Press an empty part of the page to put the picture down. Click Done or press Esc to put the tool away.

All pictures

The Pictures dialog lists every picture in the document with how well it will print — the one thing about a picture you can’t see on screen.

  1. On the Edit tab, click All pictures… (or choose More › Pictures…).
  2. Read the list.

Each picture shows:

  • Its resolution as drawn, such as 300 dpi. Below 150 dpi it is shown in amber, with Fine on screen, soft on paper — it is drawn larger than it was made.
  • Page 2 · 1200 × 800 — its page and its size in pixels, with · JPEG for a JPEG.

On each row:

ButtonWhat it does
Go thereCloses the dialog and goes to the picture’s page.
Replace…Choose a PNG or JPEG in the Choose a picture dialog. The new picture takes the old one’s place and size.
RemoveRemoves the picture from the page.

When you replace a picture, the message says one of:

  • Replaced, in the same place and at the same size.
  • Replaced. followed by the file name and is a different shape from the one it replaced, so the page has stretched it to the same box.
  • Nixt PDF can put PNG and JPEG pictures into a document. followed by the file name and is neither.

When the document has no pictures, the dialog says so.

Undo takes back a replacement or a removal. A picture you replace or remove is still in the document’s earlier revision until it is rewritten; see Hidden content.
