What each message, warning and error in Nixt Writer means, and what to do about it.
Writer tells you what happened in the status bar at the bottom of the window, and uses dialogs for errors that stop a file from opening. This page lists the messages you can see, grouped by what you were doing. Text in italics stands for a name, number or reason that changes.
Opening files
These appear in a dialog titled Cannot open followed by the file’s name or path.

When a Word document’s name doesn’t match its contents — for example a .docx saved with another extension — Writer opens it and says in the status bar that the file is named with one extension but its contents are a document.

There is newer work than the file
An autosave copy is newer than the saved file, usually because Writer closed before you saved.
