Find text

  1. Open the find bar.
  2. Enter the text to look for in Find in document.

Writer searches whenever the text in the box changes. It highlights every match in amber and selects the first one in the document. The status bar says how many matches there are — for example 7 matches — or No matches for followed by the search text.

To move between matches:

  • Press Return in the search box, or click the down arrow, for the next match.
  • Click the up arrow for the previous match.

After the last match, the next match is the first one again.

Searching ignores capitals: “report” finds “Report” and “REPORT”. It matches the text exactly as typed otherwise, including spaces and parts of words.

Replace one match

  1. Find the text as above, and move to the match you want to replace.
  2. Type the new text in Replace with.
  3. Click Replace.

The selected match is replaced, and the highlights and counter clear. To carry on to the next match, enter the search text in Find in document again.

Replace every match

  1. Type the text to find in Find in document.
  2. Type the new text in Replace with.
  3. Click All.

Writer replaces every match in one step. The status bar says Replaced and the number of matches, or Nothing to replace. if there were none.

To take back a replace-all, press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux). One undo restores every replaced match.

Close the find bar

Click the × at the right end of the find bar, or click Find and replace on the Home tab again.

To clear the amber highlights, empty the Find in document box. The highlights also clear after Replace.
