Notes and comments
Attach notes to cells, hold threaded conversations with replies, resolve and reopen threads, and move between them across a workbook.
Nixt Sheets has two ways to attach remarks to a cell:
- A note is a single piece of text on a cell — an explanation of where a number came from, say.
- A comment is a thread: a first remark and any number of replies, which can be marked resolved when the question is settled.
Both are saved in the workbook in the formats Excel uses, so they appear in Excel as notes and threaded comments.
Notes
Add or edit a note
- Click the cell.
- Click the note button in Insert › Comments (Add a note to this cell) or in Review › Notes (New note).
- Type the note in the New note dialog.
- Click Save.
A small amber triangle appears in the cell’s top-right corner. The marker is drawn on cells that hold a value.
To read or change a note, click the cell and click the same button — its tooltip now reads Edit this cell’s note or Edit this note. The Edit note dialog opens with the note’s text.
Delete a note
- Click the cell, then click the bin in Review › Notes (Delete this note), or
- Open the note and click Delete in the Edit note dialog, or
- Open the note, delete all its text and click Save.
Deleting a note leaves the cell’s value alone.
Move between notes
- Review › Notes › Next note and Previous note move to the next or previous cell with a note on the current sheet, in reading order, wrapping round at the ends. If there are none, the status bar says This sheet has no notes.
- The count in Review › Notes, such as 3 notes, selects the first cell with a note. It is unavailable when the sheet has none.
To select every cell with a note at once, use Go to Special › Notes — see Selecting and navigating.
Comments
Comments are written and read in the Comments panel, which opens on the right of the grid.
Open the Comments panel
- Click Review › Comments › Comments. Once the sheet has threads, the button shows how many are open, such as 2 open. Click it again to close the panel.
- Or click the comment button in Review › Comments (Start a thread on cell, or Reply to the thread on cell), which opens the panel.
The panel lists every thread on the current sheet, open threads first. Above the list, a line says how many are still open, such as 2 of 5 still open., or Every thread is resolved. On a sheet with no comments, the panel says No comments on this sheet. Select a cell and write one below to start a thread somebody can reply to.
Start a thread
- Click the cell.
- In the box at the bottom of the panel — headed New thread on and the cell’s address — type your comment where it says Write a comment….
- Click Comment.
The status bar says Comment added on followed by the cell. A filled dot appears in the cell’s bottom-right corner. Comments you write are signed Me.
Reply
- Click the cell with the thread. The thread is outlined in the panel, and the box at the bottom is headed Reply on and the cell’s address.
- Type your reply.
- Click Reply.
Replying to a resolved thread reopens it.
Resolve and reopen
Click the tick button on the thread in the panel (Mark this thread resolved). The thread shows Resolved, moves below the open threads, and its dot on the cell becomes hollow. Click the tick again (Reopen this thread) to reopen it.
Delete a thread
- In the panel, click the bin on the thread (Delete this thread), or
- Click the cell and click the bin in Review › Comments (Delete the thread on cell). It is unavailable when the cell has no thread (This cell has no comment thread).
The whole thread, with its replies, is deleted. The status bar says Thread on cell deleted.
Move between comments
- In the panel, click a thread’s cell address to select that cell.
- Review › Comments › Next comment and Previous comment move through every thread in the workbook, switching sheets as needed and wrapping round at the ends. The status bar shows a summary of the thread you land on. If the workbook has none, it says There are no comments in this workbook.
Before you share a workbook
- The Comments button tells you at a glance how many threads on the sheet are still open.
- Review › Proofing › Statistics counts comment threads and unresolved threads across the whole workbook. See Checking a workbook before you share it.
